Did you know that 50% of dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer? Studies show that carcinogens inside pet food and too much exposure to the sun is the leading cause of cancer in dogs.
Video on the right is a 6 minute overview of the pet food industry and the unhealthy ingredients that goes into making your commercial dog food that you get at your local Petsmart, Petco, and various supermarkets.
What you need to know about commericial dog food.
Have you ever tried to read the ingredients on the back of your dog food? "Poultry by products", "bone and meat meal", "BHA/BHT", "Ethoxyquin" Scratching your head? Don't worry, so were we!
According to the Association of Animal Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), poultry by-products:
"must consist of non-rendered clean parts of carcasses of slaughtered poultry free from fecal content and foreign matter except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice."
AAFCO guidlines are misleading in suggesting that standard pet food can fill a pet's dietary needs. There is no such thing as a meal providing "complete and balanced nutrition," for both pets and for humans!
- Poultry / Beef by-product means that your dog food may contain: intestines, heads and feet, internal organs, hearts, lungs, thorax, and abdomen. Referencing back to the definition AAFCO gave, you are mistaken if you think that slaughter houses will even attempt to remove fecal matter from each and every slaughtered animal.
- Non-rendered clean parts of carcassas means: boiling of any animal substance discarded by slaughter houses as unfit for human consumption. These meats are not only from dead, dying, diseased, and disabled animals, but they may have cancerous tumors, worm infested organs, and all kinds of chemical injections. These factories even take in dead zoo animals, euthanized pets from animal shelters and veterinary clinics.
- Bone and Meat Meal means it contains a large portion of bone which is difficult for dogs to digest.
- BHA/BHT and Ethoxyquin are carcinogens that help preserve food for a long period of time. It is known to increase the risk of cancer, and liver enlargements.
Listed after the main ingredients are vitamins and supplements. The dog food is cooked at high temperature that they must add extra supplements. But while the food analysis may show ample amounts, the vitamins are then cooked again at high temperatures so once again the quality of nutrients are diminished.
